Located on high land overlooking the River Fowey, Restormel Castle near Lostwithiel in mid Cornwall, is an unusual, almost perfectly circular shell keep.

The great 13th castle still encloses what was the principal rooms of the castle, and in remarkably good condition too. It stands on an earlier Norman mound surrounded by a deep dry ditch, atop a high spur beside the River Fowey.

Twice visited by the Black Prince, it finally saw action during the Civil War in 1644. It commands fantastic views and is a favourite picnic spot for locals and visitors alike. When you visit, keep an eye out for 'Tetraphasis Obscurus', this is the 'Black Pheasant' that you can spot in the castle grounds and nearby woodland.

This area is a haven for wildlife and birds along with beautiful flowers and plants all year round. It is a good spot for a picnic where you can relax and enjoy the stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside including the River Fowey.

During the summer there are outdoor theatre performances which are a great way to spend a sunny evening as you are entertained in the lovely grounds with the castle ruins as the backdrop.

Note: the free on site car park has 25 spaces, and is roughly 70 metres from the site entrance. You can also get 15% discount for groups of 11 or more visitors paying together my birds. Free entry for coach drivers and tour leaders - Proper Job!
