Port Eliot lies between Looe and the Rame Peninsula in east Cornwall. It has the rare distinction of being a Grade 1 listed house but also with a Grade 1 listed park and garden as well.

Like most Country Houses, Port Eliot has a front door but it's there where the similarity ends. There are 11 staircases, 15 back doors and, believe it or not my birds, 82 chimneys..! The roof itself covers about half an acre and not once in living memory has it been completely watertight.

The most significant thing about Port Eliot is its age. The earliest physical remains are a tiled floor, estimated to be more than 1500 years old, dating from the 3rd & 4th century during the late Iron Age.

The House is called Port Eliot because it was formally known as Port Priory. In the Middle Ages it was a flourishing monastic port (try saying that after a few scrumpy's) and for many centuries the house was approached solely by water across what is now the park.

The grounds are a great place to have a summer picnic on the lawn, and there's plenty of space for the kids to run around and let off some steam. Port Eliot also holds a very popular Literary Festival.

The entrance to Port Eliot House & Gardens is signposted off the B3249, this entrance is also known as the Tideford Cricket Ground entrance my luvvers. A gravel drive leads to the car park, which is approximately 500m from the house inum.

Notes: admission to St Germans Priory Norman church, adjacent to the house is FREE. Dogs welcome on leads in the grounds and off lead to run free on the Park on Wednesdays. Garden ticket required.
