Polperro & Looe Feb 2013 008

Cornish: Porthpyra

Quintessential Cornish fishing village. Smuggling is thought to have prospered since Polperro developed as a port around the 12th century. Peaking in the late 18th century, the high taxation of many imported goods made it worthwhile for some local fishermen to boost their income by the covert importation of spirits, tobacco and other goods from Guernsey and elsewhere.

For centuries the village has been a pilchard fishing and processing port and today the main industry is tourism. Many visitors return year after year and it's no surprise why.

The Polperro Festival isn held annually on the 3rd Saturday in June!
