Unique prehistoric evidence of working for alluvial tin, the site of the first recorded tin stamps in the Duchy (1493) and its 18th century tin mine makes Poldark one of west Cornwall’s most important heritage sites.

Situated in the picturesque Wendron Valley, now a World Heritage Site, this was once the scene of intense industrial activity, yet the site’s attractive surroundings and gardens somewhat belie its industrial past.

Described as a 'Jewel in the Crown of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site', the mine tour helps to give a unique insight into working conditions in 18th and early 19th century tin mines and also into Cornwall's geology. It is the only complete underground mine open to the public in Cornwall and Devon.

Poldark is once again the scene of activity now though, with craft workshops run by local crafts people including jewellers, candle makers, pottery makers, ceramic painters and wood turners. An independent site, rescued from receivers in 2000 by local mining heritage enthusiasts, Poldark receives no public funding support but is assisted by volunteers including Cornwall Mine Rescue Organization.

By the 1820's Cornish mining skills and Cornish manufactured pumping engines were in great demand throughout the world and there followed over 100 years of contract mining overseas and emigration to every continent. The result is that Cornish engine houses, so familiar to visitors to the Duchy, are also landmarks in many foreign countries, from the mountains of Mexico to Australia, the plains of Spain to the gold fields of South Africa and even on tropical Caribbean islands!
