Heligan, seat of the Tremayne family for more than 400 years, is one of the most mysterious estates in mid Cornwall, maybe even in the whole of England!

At the end of the 19th century its thousand acres were in their prime, but just a matter of a few years later bramble and ivy were already drawing a green veil around the neck of this “Sleeping Beauty”.

After decades of neglect, the devastating hurricane of 1990 should have consigned the Lost Gardens of Heligan to a footnote in history. But, over twenty years on, this award-winning garden restoration is already internationally acclaimed. Heligan is a garden for all seasons and as such there is no best time of year to visit.

Acting as a living window to the past, the restoration of a Victorian Produce Garden stands as a working memorial to Heligan’s Lost Gardeners. Cultivated throughout the year, these gardens once met the needs of the Tremayne family and their guests at the Big House. Today, over 200 different varieties of mostly heritage fruit, vegetable and salads are now lovingly tended to supply the Heligan Tearoom with fresh, seasonal produce throughout the year.

Do allow plenty of time for your visit. Heligan has over 200 acres to explore. There is a guided tour (which lasts approximately 1 hour my luvvers) is available for first time visitors, after which your group should then allow at least another 3 hours to explore the rest of the estate.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan are not far from Mevagissey. Why not combine the two in a visit to this part of the south Cornish coast; spend a few hours enjoying the wonderful gardens and then maybe pop into Meva for fish & chips or visit Caerhays Castle and beach....ansum!
