It has Cornwall’s largest working water wheel as well as some vintage commercial vehicles and a visitor platform overlooking a working China Clay pit.

Wheal Martyn is an area centre for the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site situated between Luxulyn valley and Charlestown which are part of the World heritage site. There are at least 175 places, across six continents, where Cornish mine workers took their skills, technology and traditions; making it a truly global heritage.

Cornwall’s mining landscape, which was shaped during a period of intense industrial activity, is testimony to one of the greatest periods of economic, technological and social development Britain has ever known.

The museum was established in 1975 by the producers of china clay in Cornwall to preserve and record the history of the mid Cornwall area. It is situated alongside the St Austell river in a valley which contained several china clay works.

There is a children’s woodland play area and acres of nature trails and woodland walks help to keep the younger visitors entertained. There is also a licensed cafe with outside terrace offering the best Cornish food and drink and a gift shop selling a unique range of quality gifts and souvenirs.
