CHARLESTOWN Cornish: Porth Meur

Charlestown grew out of very humble beginnings. It was nothing more than a small fishing village named West Polmear and consisted of a few small cottages and three cellars were pilchards were processed. It was Charles Rashleigh who began the construction of a harbour and dock - hence the name 'Charlestown'!

The harbour itself is owned by Square Sail, a company that owns and sails a small fleet of tall ships, including Kaskelot. One or two of these can often be found at anchor in the harbour.

The interactive map below shows a wide range of visitor attractions and holiday accommodation in the area, as well as local services like banks & cash machines, car-parks, vets and more.

FACT: Charlestown harbour has been used several times as a filming location for both film and television dramas!
