The Acorn, Penzance’s theatre, is dedicated to the performing arts – theatre, comedy, music and dance. As both a touring venue and a performance space for local artists, it is a vibrant, creative and life-enhancing centre for all of west Cornwall.

The Acorn welcomes a wide range of arts practitioners and art forms, including live music, theatre, poetry readings, story-telling, dance, film, lectures and the visual arts.  They also host charity fundraising events, classes, workshops, children’s events, album launches, open or group meetings, markets, private parties and wedding receptions.   From international tours to school plays, the Acorn has a welcome for everyone interested in the arts.

Since its inception The Acorn has had the status of a charity, The Acorn Trust. In recent years it has been run as a professionally staffed theatre and arts centre with an arts development remit.

In June 1996 the Acorn Arts Centre was awarded a significant grant from the National Lottery to undertake essential refurbishment of its premises and re-design the internal layout including improved access. Building works were completed in 1998 and the Acorn Arts Centre re-opened as a flexible venue with a 170-seat main theatre and a smaller basement bar/theatre with a 80 seat capacity.

But in May 2010 the Trustees, acting on advice from the staff and stakeholders, agreed that this model was not viable without another significant increase in funding. In the absence of an assurance that this increase would be forthcoming, in August 2010 the theatre closed and the staff were made redundant. However, since March 2011 a reconstituted Board of Trustees, with financial support from Arts Council England and Cornwall Council, has set about bringing The Acorn back to life.
